Winter tries its hardest to keep us indoors, because let’s be honest — the idea of cozying up next to a fireplace with your Netflix guilty pleasure and a glass (or bottle) of wine sounds pretty tempting. But cold weather can only act as an excuse for so long! Our editors put these performance-driven, fleece-lined leggings to the test so you can stay on top of your fitness goals all season long, whether it’s running, walking, or hitting the slopes.
1. Champion Performance Fleece Tights
If simplicity and affordability are more important than having the most fashion-forward (and expensive) leggings on the block, these are your jam. The company’s Warm Control fabric keeps you from freezing without adding extra weight, while the flat seams make chafing a thing of the distant past. Our editor Bridget Clegg says that “these definitely kept me warm, but weren’t too hot that I couldn’t wear them around my apartment as well.” She also suggests sizing up if you’re in-between sizes.
2. Under Armour ColdGear Cozy Leggings
When it comes to value, these UnderArmour leggings can’t be beat! They’re stylish, highly functional for indoor and outdoor workouts, and the quality is right on par with the more expensive pairs. The fleece lining is very thin, so these are a great option when you just need a little more warmth for your walks and runs. Our Site Director Jamie Miles took these for a spin and especially loved the back storage pocket. “It doesn’t zip, but my phone sat comfortably inside the back pocket, allowing me to lift hand weights while safely storing my phone. I also loved the design of these leggings!”
3. Columbia Glacial Fleece Printed Leggings
These leggings aren’t fleece-lined, but rather fully made of fleece. Hello, cozy vibes! The fabric doesn’t have much stretch, so we don’t recommend wearing these for strenuous workouts, but they’re a great option for layering, lounging, or casual walks around the neighborhood. After testing these, I felt like they would be a perfect replacement for regular cotton leggings in the wintertime, and I definitely suggest ordering a size up!
4. GapFit Winterbrush High Rise Reflective Leggings
Gap really hit the nail on the head with these leggings. They’re perfect for late-night or early-morning winter runs, thanks to the high-performance jersey material with a warm, brushed interior, and reflective details. Our editor Kayla Ramsey wore these on a run in 40-degree weather, and says “I loved these leggings because they didn’t restrict me AT ALL. I could stretch and move to my heart’s content in these, and they went with me and the fabric didn’t constrain me… These passed all my tests.”
5. The North Face Winter Warm Mid-Rise Tights
When your breath is visible, it’s easy to blame your laziness on the weather. But these heavyweight leggings will keep you warm, whether running in subzero temps or wearing under your ski pants. The two small stash pockets will keep your essentials secure, too. Although the fleece is fairly thick, I found these to have a sporty, unrestrictive feel that would easily hold up through a range of winter activities. They’re 100% going in my suitcase on the next ski trip.
