This Oprah-Approved Foot Massager Is What We’re Getting Mom for Mother’s Day

Giving a truly great gift can be a tough act to follow. In recent years, I’ve been going all-out for my mom on Mother’s Day, to thank her, in my own very small way, for the boundless love and patience that she’s given to me and my brother through our lives.

After gifting her a Dyson vacuum, a set of Pottery Barn flameless candles, a Le Creuset Dutch Oven, and a pair of Warby Parker sunglasses over the last few years, however, I’m getting close to tapped-out on indulgences that my mom would actually like. Since she is my longtime pedicure pal, treating her to a favorite spa treatment has always been my back-pocket gift idea, just in case I can’t come up with anything else in time — but I’m pretty sure that giving her the InstaShiatsu Foot Massager from TruMedic this year will be far more memorable.

If the InstaShiatsu looks a little familiar, it might be because it was featured in Oprah’s most recent “Favorite Things” list. In the December 2018 issue of O Magazine, she writes, “When I tried this foot massager, I swear fireworks lit the sky, waves pounded against the shore, and a choir of angels sang. This is some powerful pampering.”

OK, we’ll have what Oprah’s having! And if one mega-mogul endorsement isn’t enough for you, just know that Kris Jenner is also a fan, and reportedly gifted the InstaShiatsu to her entire brood!

So what is it, exactly? The InstaShiatsu foot massager is a futuristic-looking, pod-shaped unit that users can slip their feet into to experience total bliss on demand. The device is equipped with three different massage modes (each with three different intensities), which use a combination of rolling foot massage and air pressure for varying sensations. The InstaShiatsu also has an on/off heat mode, and even includes air-compression sleeve attachments, which are meant to increase circulation in the calves.

Oprah’s description is pretty spot-on: This foot massager is indeed powerful. I’m used to cranking the intensity all the way up when I use a massage chair at the spa, so I figured the idea behind this one would be exactly the same. Oh, how naive of me.

Its first massage mode is undoubtedly the firmest, as it uses the rolling foot-massage function and air pressure in tandem; it’s an intense feeling initially, but one you quickly get used to and begin to crave. The second mode uses more air pressure, but the foot massage is a little gentler. The third massage mode uses frequent air pressure and very little of the rolling massage, and is a nice cool-down from the rigorous rub-down.

Afterwards, you’ll feel as blissed-out as if you’ve been on an all-day CBD bender. Plus, a foot massage doesn’t just feel good in the moment — a 2016 study on coronary patients showed that regular reflexology treatments, in combination with soaking feet in a warm bath, can actually reduce sleep disturbances and improve the quality of sleep! It just goes to show, a little extra pampering can go a long way.

My mom definitely appreciates the finer things, but the simple things too — her (and also my!) idea of a perfect evening is spent at home, curled up with a glass of white and a PBS documentary. Gifting her this ultra relaxing foot massager will help take that luxe feeling to a whole new level. Just don’t ask me yet how I’m going to top this for next year!
