This ScatMat Is the Only Way I Get a Good Night’s Sleep As A Pet Parent

After endless nights of disrupted beauty sleep thanks to my nocturnal cat Ludlow, I’ve turned to a training tool that has become a complete savior. It’s PetSafe’s ScatMat, an indoor pet-training mat that mildly shocks your pet if they step on it. But wait — before you automatically put me in the “bad pet parent” bucket, let me explain. This is a battery-operated training pad that harmlessly gives your pet a 3-second static pulse when they step on the mat. It has different intensity levels, from mild to more powerful for more stubborn animals.

I’ve been using my mat in front of my bedroom door at night on the lowest static level and it’s worked wonders. In the past, I’d be woken up at 4 or 5 a.m. with a meowing cat in my face, demanding breakfast. If I shut the door to keep him out at night, he’d scratch at the door and meow at various octaves, successfully waking me up from a sound sleep. The only option when this happened was to roll out of bed, feed the cat, and head back to sleep, only to get 20 more minutes of zzz’s before he came back asking to play. I felt like I had a newborn baby at home, but one who never grew out of this stage, and my only option was to walk around like a sleep-deprived zombie.

My uncle was the one who actually told me about this device because he has been using it for the last few years to keep his three (!) cats out of his bedroom, for the same reason: sleep preservation. I’ve been using this mat for about a year, and it’s changed my cat’s routine for the best. Now just the presence of the mat works to keep him away from my bedroom door because he’s conditioned to know that if he comes too close, he’ll get a soft zap. This has also resulted in me getting at least 2 more hours of uninterrupted sleep, because now he waits until about 7 a.m. to eat breakfast. This is better for him, too, because he is eating his meals on more of a set schedule — and when he eats later in the morning, he lasts the day without being super hungry by the time I get home from work and feed him dinner.

This mat is also a perfect solution if you’re hoping to train your pet to stay off of fancy furniture like wooden tables or a new couch. You can lay the mat out over the top, and your cat or dog will know that it’s a “no-go” zone. It can also keep your pet safe, as you can put a mat in front of a cabinet full of cleaning supplies, or on top of your kitchen counter — so your pet avoids getting dangerously close to a hot stove.

All in all, the PetSafe ScatMat has been a win-win for myself and for my cat. He has his routine, and I have my sleep.
